Other High School Newspapers

1. My favorite newspaper cover was the Northwest Passage, because the picture and font are interesting.
2. The newspaper that immediately caught my attention was the tiger print, because the image on the cover has contrast that grabs my attention, the pink stands out from the black in the rest of the image.
3. My favorite headline was @Twitter takes over, because its eye catching and uses a play on words.

Headlines:the main title for a newspaper or other material; is usually at the top

Sub headlines:a secondary title, used for a part of writing within a larger part of writing

Lines

Boxes: a news report that is surrounded by a printed rule; used to display important stories

Photos: pictures made using a camera

Teaser"front page box placed over or below the newspaper masthead; lists the important stories run on inside pages, or boxes announcing a paper's inside contents.

Flag: the title of the overall newspaper; usually surrounded by 'ears'

Folios:the line of text placed on top of inside pages, giving the page number, day and date of publication. 

Captions: text used to describe a photo; cutline

Stories: a news report of any length, usually presented in a straightforward style and without editorial comment

Bylines: the line that goes with the story;commonly gives the authors name 

Jumps: part of the story that is continued from the front page to an inside page of a newspaper 

Screens: a pattern of toy dots used to create gray areas

Infographics:an art form where words are used with charts, illustration, graphs or photographs to tell  news story.

Masthead/staff box:the forehead of the newspaper where the title of the newspaper is published,;gives the place of publication and publication date

Front Page: Rewards created for good attendance raises questions
This article talks about the attendance incentives that are now in place at Bowie. Some students think that the incentives are put in place just for the money, and that this isn't a great way to get students to attend school. Although, those who support the incentives believe it is a good way to raise attendance and keep children in school.

How: Offer to personalize parking spaces, off periods, and ,making the finals not count.

Student Life: Walking more than the hallways
Jasmine Correa is a pageant queen as well as a student. She recently one Miss Teen Belleza Latina, which is a big accomplishment. She has many talents other than Pageants for example, she does photography.

News: Freshman Katelyn Dill takes home grand champion award
Bowie high school held a science fair where all the students could show off their intellectual talents. The article also discusses how sophomores have the opportunity to judge elementary school students. The annual science fair had many winners including Katelyn Dill.

Why: Because they want to enlighten students and encourage them to explore more.
How: Students work on projects all year and present them to judges

Sports:Swiftly overcoming obstacles
The students Joseph Killeen and Seth Lieifheit do parkour outside of school for exercise. They both enjoy testing their endurance, and see it as a unique way to show off their skills.

3. If you were a photographer on staff, which event/photo assignment would you have liked to do for this issue? You will need to look through the entire paper and see the topics covered and decide which one you think would have been fun.

4. Overall, how would you rate the photography in this issue? What were the strong points and weak points.

I am asking you to do this because I want to see our photography improve next year. I think we do a good job, but I expect better. I want to know how you could impact the photography in the newspaper if you joined the class next year.

"Just before her intimate photos were hacked--and splashed across the Web--Jennifer Lawrence posed topless for Patrick Demarchelier for the cover of Vanity Fair's November issue. As part of the accompanying cover story, she decided to break her silence about one of the biggest scandals in Hollywood this year. The Guardian called her salvo "the end of the 'shamed starlet.'" So strong was the outpouring of social-media support for Lawrence's stance that The New York Times reported on the fact "fans took to Twitter to applaud her." Demarchelier's striking photos of the Hunger Games actress also helped spark a thoughtful debate about a woman's right to reveal her body. Lawrence (and the V.F. cover) made her message loud and clear: "It's my body, and it should be my choice."

This is my favorite magazine cover out of the top covers. I like this one, not only because I like Jennifer Lawrence, but I like the mood the photo has. Her expression is interesting, and the background is interesting as well. I also like the messiness of her hair, and the way the jewelry draws your eyes in. The nudity isn't so blatant that it is distasteful, but it is different. Its sexy, but not trashy which is sometimes hard to do. I like that there is text above the heading that helps describe the picture. The reader can assume that the cover was a way to get her point across that she is comfortable with her body.
