Earthquake Story

On October 20 at 9:12 am an earthquake struck the San Francisco bay area, killing two and injuring six.

The earthquake that lasted around thirty seconds was a 6.4 on the richter scale, and caused a gas leak to explode in an auto part supply store on Plum street named McHenry's. The store then collapsed, and the American Red Cross, firefighters, and police responded to the accident. The firefighters used ropes to stabilize the auto supply store. Of the six injured, only three had injuries serious enough to cause them to be in need of hospitalization. The injured were hospitalized at Hayward General Hospital. No other serious injuries caused by the earthquake have been reported in the Hayward area yet.

The responders to the accident arrived to the scene quickly.

"Twenty-one fire personnel, 12 police and five American Red cross workers responded to the building collapse, with some arriving within four minutes of the quake", Jennifer Vu said.

The residents near the collapsed building went through the 6.4 earthquake and recall exactly what happened during the catastrophic accident.

"I dove under the table just as I heard an explosion outside and a chunk of cement flew through my kitchen window. Thats when the screaming started across the street",  Mike Beamer recalled.

The earthquake was strong, and even people in neighboring cities felt the shaking.

"People as far south as Los Angeles and as far north as Redding felt the quake", scientist Penny Gertz stated.
